Tips For Passing the Series 7 Exam

Tips For Passing the Series 7 Exam

The Series 7 Exam is a test designed to ensure that those who deal securities as registered agents are qualified to do so. It is considered by most to be a difficult exam and many professionals must take it at least a few times in order to get the required grade of 70 percent or higher. But with the right kind of study, you can pass the Series 7 Exam with flying colors: here are some tips.

Textbooks

--Invest in a good study program specifically geared toward helping you pass the Series 7 Exam. The easiest place to find these is online. You can get textbooks, sample exams, audio CDs and even take "virtual classes" via DVD. The advantage of using a DVD instead of attending live classes is that you can stop the program whenever you need to or rewind and go through difficult material as often as you need until you fully comprehend it.

Textbooks

--Check the internet: there are plenty of sites that offer specifics on what kinds of areas are likely to be focused on. These can include tax law, closing trades and marketing techniques to promote your firm. Between buying a study program and doing your own research online, you should have all the information you need: all you have left to do is study.

--Study using metacognitive skills: It is not enough to just review the material and "get through it." You must actively train yourself to stop and self-test yourself on the various concepts. If you really aren't "getting it," stop and go over it again and again until you do. Use mnemonic devices and other strategies to help with retention: they really work come test time!

--Get plenty of sleep and don't try to cram the night before taking the test: by that time you either know it or you don't. Relax and take a deep breath. If you've done everything you can to study hard and learn the material, you should do just fine.

Avoid the Mess With These Great Tips on Locker Organization

Avoid the Mess With These Great Tips on Locker Organization

Every school year there are tons of goals and back to school ideas that students have. Keeping their school locker clean and well organized is one of these goals. It is amazing how fast that goal becomes a thing of the past. Before long there are loose papers which turn into missing assignments, books thrown around, pencils/pens fall out as soon as the locker is opened and the list goes on.

Textbooks

Trying to keep a clean locker is a hard task. Many times students are rushing between classes and there is not a moment to spare when they are trying to find the books needed for class before the bell rings. It feels like a race against time and when there is a messy locker on the winning team, the winning team is bound to meet its first loss.

Textbooks

Here is a look at different locker organizer supplies that will help keep things in order.

Books

Consider using locker shelves to put textbooks on. There are shelves available that can fit into standard size school lockers. These shelves can be used for textbooks in the same manner that a bookshelf is used. Because the weight capacity may vary per shelf, always put the heaviest books on the bottom.

Use book covers to cover books and store the books on the shelves with the spine facing the direction of the open locker. Using a different color cover for each subject or writing the name of the subject on the spine can also help.

Pens/Pencils/Highlighters

To combat the problem of pens and pencil being scattered on the floor of the locker or ending up in between a book, get a magnetic pen holder. This is a handy tool and is extremely useful when there is a need to grab and go. Also, it also helps to prevent the results of the leaking pen that we all have experienced at one time or another.

Class Schedules

Many students tape their school schedules to the inside of their locker door. While doing so is okay it is not the better option. The better option would be to use magnets to hang a copy of the schedule on the inside of the locker door. If the schedule needs to be removed for any reason, using magnets will prevent residue that may be left on the locker door from using tape.

These simple changes will prove to effectively help out with the goal of keeping a clean and organized locker in school.

How to Get a College Degree in One Year

How to Get a College Degree in One Year

Getting a Bachelors Degree in one year might seem impossible, but it is not. There are some key factors that will help you complete your degree in one year. Use the following steps as a guideline to getting closer in obtaining your college degree:

Textbooks

Choosing a Degree

Textbooks

1. Choose a degree that fits you. Choosing the right degree will allow you to take more classes at the same time because you can choose courses that you know better. For instance, if you are a computer person, choose a degree with computer classes. You will not be bored and you should get better grades because it is something you enjoy. You want to choose a degree that you are familiar with.

College Credit

2. Most colleges offer college credit for work / life experience. Speak with the academics office and complete work / life experience forms. The college will require some evidence that you actually have work / life experience from work or your own life to get credits for certain courses. Myself, I have a computer networking background and was able to get credit for a networking course. That saved me 00 due to the fact that I did not have to take the course. To get credit for each course, a request for the course name and number need to be submitted along with an essay describing my work / life experience for that course and how I understand the concept of the course. Also, documentation from work was submitted along with the application to further enforce the credit request. The better you re-enforce how serious you are about the credit request, the more likely you will have it approved and get free college credit. Once you receive the college credit, you can re-evaluate any other courses towards your degree.

Other Options for College Credit

3. Another option is to CLEP the 100 level classes to save time as well, the tests are moderately difficult and does cost money, but nowhere near as much as an entire course. If you have a military background, transferring credits from your military work/ life experience can be done through a program called Smart Transcript. If you also completed certifications, they can sometimes be used to gain college credits, but you need a solid foundation on the topic and need to prove that you use the subject daily.

Set a Goal

4. Finally, set a goal and determine how many courses are required to complete your degree. Find out how long it will take you to complete your degree if you take one, two, or three courses a semester. If you need to take three or more courses a semester, make it easy on yourself by taking two classes that are easier for you to understand and one difficult course. This makes it easier come homework and testing time because you will feel comfortable with the easier courses. For example: Take a math course along with two computer courses if you are a computer person.

The key to completing your college degree in one year is to get any free college credit you can and make a plan. Following the steps outlined above will ensure your success in college and also save you money. It may take some time, but writing a few short essays for college credit is well worth it.

Your Textbooks and Your Locker Shelf - Tips That Make a Difference

Your Textbooks and Your Locker Shelf - Tips That Make a Difference

How To Make the Right Choice

Textbooks

The idea of being able to put books that are often heavy somewhere other than in a backpack, which students normally carry around, is surely something that students look forward to. However, the school locker soon becomes an easy dumping ground and rapidly things transform into a state of confusion inside of it and the need to keep things organized in the locker increases.

Textbooks

A locker organizer or more specifically, a locker shelf is a necessity if your student is going to utilize his locker as his/her primary textbook storage. Before looking at ways to neatly organize the additional items stored in the locker, books are the primary things that will need to be arranged in an orderly fashion. Your student will undoubtedly have a textbook for each class along with a notebook and perhaps some supplemental books as well that are associated with the class. The locker organizer that can help maintain this order would be a locker shelf.

When choosing a locker shelf, there are a few things you need to keep in mind:

1. Is your student allowed to carry books inside the classroom? If they are, then the amount of textbooks that will be kept inside of the locker may be minimal.

2. What grade is your student in? Most of the time, the earlier grades don't have a high volume of textbooks but as they get further along into middle school and high school that drastically changes.

3. Are the books mostly hardcover books or paperbacks? This will make a big difference as the weight will vary between the two.

4. Is your student to required to bring the textbooks to class each day? There are instances where students are allowed to keep the books at home and use them only for homework assignments.

The amount of books being kept on the locker shelf will undoubtedly have an impact on the type of shelf that you purchase. The choices range from plastic shelves that can withstand higher weights to wire shelves that should generally be used with a few heavy items but moreso lightweight items.

New Textbook Technology

New Textbook Technology

Higher education institutions have been slow to embrace the development of e-textbooks and continue to require students to purchase books in print. But one school in Indiana is ready to make the switch from paper to digital.

Textbooks

Trine University's School of Professional Studies has mandated the use of e-textbooks for all courses, beginning with the upcoming spring semester in January. Five hundred adult learners are enrolled in TU's School of Professional Studies. The school has ten different degree programs for which students may take either online courses or traditional courses at branch campus locations across the state. School administrators expect that the use of e-textbooks will not only save students money, but will also enhance classroom interactivity and convey the positive message of sustainability.

Textbooks

David Wood, the school's dean, said that instructors are excited about the switch to digital textbooks. "The e-textbook really provides a lot of interactive opportunities for students," he said. Teachers will be able to type comments in the e-textbooks and even include links and questions for discussion. Special features of the books will allow students to highlight the text and take notes as they read, and online forums have been created where students can compare notes with one another and discuss course material.

Follet Higher Education Group, which operates TU's campus bookstore, runs an online platform called CafeScribe, where the e-textbooks will be managed. Jen Eveslage, intellectual-property manager for Follet predicts that the switch to e-textbooks may be a challenge at first, because the process will be unfamiliar. But as students and teachers become comfortable with the system, the benefit will be great. "They're going to become much more engaged with the text," she said.

Faculty members were included in the development process of the e-textbooks, so instructors will not have to make many changes to their original course material. Follet also collaborated with publishing companies, to ensure that traditional textbooks necessary to TU's curriculum were able to be converted to a digital format.

The Best Way to Find a Job After College is to Find Internships in Your Major

The Best Way to Find a Job After College is to Find Internships in Your Major

Most students take an internship in their undergraduate years that has nothing to do with their major. It may be something they like to do but they really don't spend a lot of time thinking about it.

Textbooks

The reason it is important to find internships in your career field is because it helps you get the experience you need to enter the job market. An internship isn't always paid but the experience you get will help you move into a paid position.

Textbooks

Internships are easy to find. One of the first places to check is the department that hosts your major. As an example, if you are a business major, go to the business department. They keep a list of internships and jobs that are within the business field.

If you find yourself without a specific major but you want to work with people, you can ask in your counseling or jobs office. Often they have a variety of opportunities that they can't always fill because no one comes to find them. Even when they advertise them this is an area that is often overlooked.

Other ways to find internships is through your college's website online. Often there is a career or jobs site that lists these opportunities so that students can search at home. This allows you to gather information before you approach your career center on campus.

One of the mistakes that students make is saying they can only take an internship if it is paid. Let's face it. Everyone wants to be paid for their work but the truth is that most internships will not be paid. They are invaluable though for the experience that they create for you. So, don't hurt your chances by eliminating those that aren't paid.

Try to find at least one internship while you are in college so that you can have the opportunity to try out your career choice. However, don't stop at one; try several. This will be a time for you to check out how different environments feel and how you like working in this field. Taking more than one will help you discover what type of job you want after college.

If you find internships, whether it is paid or not, make sure that you always act professionally, even if others in the office do not. Your position there is to gain the experience you need and to walk out of the internship with a stellar reference that you can put on your resume.

All internships have an internship supervisor and this is probably the person who will give you the evaluation and reference at the end. Check in with this person as often as you need to but don't be obnoxious. Make sure you are doing a good job and ask for feedback as you go.

When you apply for internships make sure you treat it as a job opportunity. Have a cover letter, resume and list of any classes that you have taken that qualify you for this job. Treat it like you are serious and make sure you have a good reason why you want to work with them because this will be a question that comes up.

Physics in a Nutshell For 'O' and 'A' Levels

Physics in a Nutshell For 'O' and 'A' Levels

Breaking down Physics

Textbooks

The best way to solve a big problem is to use a method called divide and conquer; i.e. divide it into smaller parts, then solve each part individually. Why is this the best way? This is because solving a small problem puts lesser stress and uses mental power than a large problem.

Textbooks

The above principle can be used for many things, for example studying. Physics is like the big problem described above. The best way to learn and understand it is to sub-divide into many small parts, then conquer them individually, before finally grouping them together.

So how can we divide physics into smaller parts? In my opinion, there are five parts to physics.

1) Newtonian Mechanics
2) Waves and Oscillations
3) Thermodynamics
4) Electromagnetism
5) Modern Physics

The first step is to understand each and every single part. Once the first step is done, the second step will be to draw linkages between these parts to further improve our problem-solving capabilities. For example, Mechanics can be present in Electromagnetism and vice versa, hence the importance of linkages.

Question-based Approach to Scoring

The second part I'm going to share is the technique of using questions to improve understanding and scoring for exams. The main idea behind this is to read the notes once, then do a large number of questions with your notes/textbook in hand. In this technique, you are allowed to read and search your notes/textbook for the answers. However, you are required to do at least 6 complete test papers worth of questions (means just do a lot of questions).

This method is what I will emphasize more than merely memorizing or/and reading and re-reading of the notes. Why do I say so?

80% of your notes/textbooks are useless junks that are not tested in exams

NOTE that this is not to say 80% does not contribute to greater understanding and interest of the subject. What I really meant is that the most important portions of the notes (that will be tested) lies mainly in 20% of the notes/textbooks. By reading the notes/textbooks as you do questions, you will (i) be able to focus more on this important 20% that will most likely be tested, and (ii) do it in a shorter amount of time. This results in higher throughput; you learn more (only for doing well in your exams) in a shorter period of time. The only setback is that this reduces your exposure to other interesting aspects of physics.

Conclusion

The above two approaches can also be used in other subjects (and life situations) as well. I wish you success in employing them effectively. Feel free to point out any errors or misunderstandings, or just ask for clarifications.

Thanks.

When is the Best Time to Buy Textbooks?

When is the Best Time to Buy Textbooks?

The issue of purchasing textbooks is like many things in life an issue of timing and risk analysis. If you wait until the class starts (your safest approach because you might drop the class) you risk on missing out on all of the used copies of the required book, both in the university bookstore, and online. If you buy the book too early, you may lose out because you may drop the class. As always the issue is one of timing. If you plan to purchase a used copy of the book at your school bookstore (something I do not advise) then you have to wait until the first week of the new semester, since most university bookstores do not put books out before that time.

Textbooks

If you are planning on looking for a deal for your book online, you have to expect at least a week and a half for the book to be shipped, so if you are expecting an assignment on the first day of class, then you will need to either share with a friend, or use the library reserve copy. You can always choose to pay for express shipping, but that tends to nullify much of the savings you'd otherwise have. Also, note that price comparison sites tend to display the price of the book with the cheapest shipping.

Textbooks

As far as the best time to buy the book in order to get the best deal I would recommend buying the book 1-3 weeks before the start of the class. This should ensure both that you get the lowest price (because you will get the cheapest books before they are sold out) as well as giving you enough time to receive the book in the mail. You may still drop the class but in that case you could always sell the book the next year or semester.

Another important thing to note about looking for the best price for a book on price comparison sites is that many of the price comparison sites archive their results in order to speed the search. This greatly diminishes the quality of the returns, and makes it very difficult for you to find an up to the minute deal. At We Compare Books every search you do is live, and although this may lead the search to be a bit slower this is the only way to ensure that you are getting the most accurate price information.

Teaching Textbooks - Homeschool Math Programs - Is it Worth the Money?

Teaching Textbooks - Homeschool Math Programs - Is it Worth the Money?

I have never been a fan of Saxon Math. I used it during my first few years homeschooling because it was the most well-known and most recommended program. If I had it to do over, I never would have used Saxon at all. My kids and I found it tedious to slog through - it had such a public school feel to it. Lots of added on extras, just so the state standards got covered. At least that is how I perceive the program.

Textbooks

In the early grades (K-6) I prefer to use something like ABeka or Horizons and then switch to the "Key To" series" for reinforcement in fractions and decimals, and then switch to Teaching Textbook after that.

Textbooks

My reasons for this are that the very early grades (K-3) are straightforward and easy to teach, and I never saw the point in overwhelming a young child with so many problems and exercises to practice on the basics (except for drill work with multiplication tables). Also, as the math difficulty increased with things like long division, fractions and decimals, my children didn't find their explanations and examples to be adequate.

When my now 15-year-old son was 13, I got him the Teaching Textbook Pre-Algebra program. There is a corresponding white board lecture on CD-ROM for each lesson in the textbook. My son was able to understand most things without extra help or explanation from me. Face it, most homeschool parents are not math majors and don't remember much about Algebra (that was only 20 years ago!). It matters on how well the explanations are done for us as well. I couldn't count the number of times I have looked at math lessons and had to understand the explanations in order to help my child.

Fortunately, with Teaching Textbook, there was very little of this, at least much less than I have had with any other math program. I also felt that it left my son very well prepared for the Algebra course he is taking this year in tenth grade and he is having no problems keeping up.

It is true the Teaching Textbook program is expensive. However, you could very well get a bargain on a used program on E-bay. Also, I have always saved my pennies to buy expensive programs when it really counts, because you will really appreciate the extra help with those tougher high school math courses.

In short, forget buying the .00 math Saxon program for your first grader with all of the bells and whistles, when you really don't need it. Instead, save yourself valuable time, frustration and money by buying a top-quality program, like Teaching Textbook, down the road, when you will really need and appreciate it.

Why Rent Textbooks?

Why Rent Textbooks?

Why should one buy textbooks? This is the question so many students ask themselves these days. New textbooks not only cost so much, but they are also obsolete when the term is over. No one wants to use these books any more. Therefore, people have to find someone who can take these books from them. That is why, it is not worth to invest in new books if do not plan to use them in pursuing postgraduate studies. However, there are many advantages of having personal textbooks.

Textbooks

The first one is that you do not need to borrow books from someone when reports ought to be prepared. A person can always be on top of the class when he/she has his own textbook. He/she can even get excellent scores in quizzes. He/she can use the book as and when required rather than asking for it for someone college mate. There is no foolish reasoning as that you study so rarely, then why have a textbook. Renting a book is fine when you study just once in a year, during exams. In fact, so many students cannot actually get books for themselves. They cannot get money for these books and renting books seems fine to them.

Textbooks

Companies who sell these books desire to provide students with them. The companies want students to complete their education without any obstacles. Students have also realized that buying books is a necessity. You cannot learn much when you are not prepared to read. Just getting notes from someone at the end of the term to prepare the report is not the most desirable thing. Sometimes, not reading can reflect poorly on your grades when the report is not as detailed as it should be. You can become an intelligent kid in your class because you can study in your spare time, often enabling you to get ahead of the others.

Tips For Getting Educational Textbooks Published

Tips For Getting Educational Textbooks Published

The process of getting educational books published is one that is very challenging indeed. Educational books are an essential part of the learning process and as such the millions of students and pupils around the world have created a market worth a lot of money. But tapping into that market is not easy, as it is very competitive and the quality of educational textbooks has to be high. In this article we'll look at the process of getting such books published.

Textbooks

For an author or team of authors, the most important aspect of bringing educational textbooks to the market is finding an area of the market that has not been catered for. Once this has been identified, then the process of developing a related textbook can begin. Of course, creativity does not always work in this fashion; people have their own passions which drive them to write about certain topics. It is important to direct this passion towards a lucrative area of the topic, if there is one, before the development process is too far along.

Textbooks

Another important thing to consider is whether you wish to work on your educational textbooks by yourself or with another author - or within a team of writers. Developing textbooks takes a long time and accuracy is of the utmost importance - so having some help from some able researchers and/or writers can bring the book to fruition a lot more quickly.

It is of course a lot easier to get educational textbooks published when you have already established yourself as a writer. Getting on the first step of the ladder is the most difficult bit - bit once you do you'll find that getting published again is far easier. Even if your original publisher does not wish to publish you, many other publishers will consider you if you've been published before. Another key factor though, is how popular that book was - i.e. how much money it made.

But these things do not help the unpublished author of educational textbooks. For success, as with so many other aspects of working life, determination is of great importance. Along with determination, you should ideally conduct a great deal of market research into your chosen topic before beginning - and moulding your own interests into a textbook is important as the passion you have for a subject will come through in your book. While objectivity is of course crucial, so is an underlying desire to teach about a certain subject.

Where To Sell Back Textbooks For The Most Money

Where To Sell Back Textbooks For The Most Money

The end of the college semester is rapidly approaching, and students have more to think about than just final exams. They have to think about where they will sell back their textbooks. There are a number of options available for college students when it comes to making money on their books. Here's a list of suggestions on how to get the most cash back for your textbooks.

Textbooks

1. The College Bookstore
The college bookstore is where most students sell back their textbooks. They wait in lines, have their books examined, and they are paid on the spot for their books. The college bookstore will only give good buyback prices on books that are being used during the next semester. If the book is not being used the next semester, then chances are they will not be buying it back, or they will offer a low buyback price. During exam week, complaints about textbook buyback prices at the college bookstore can be heard around campus.

Textbooks

2. Find Someone Who Will Take The Same Class
If you know of someone who is looking to take the same class you just completed, see if they will buy your textbook. Chances are they will be interested in purchasing your textbook for a fair price. You will get cash for your book, and your fellow student will save money.

3. Sell Textbooks Online
A recent trend in making money back on textbooks is to sell them back online to websites such as MyBookCart.com. Instead of waiting in a college bookstore line, students can get quotes for their textbooks right on their computer. It provides a good comparison tool between the college bookstore and the online buyback site. If the students are happy with their buyback quote, they can ship the textbooks back for free. Payment is made by check or PayPal.

4. Check The College Boards
Some colleges have online college boards where you can list textbooks you are looking to sell. One of your fellow students may see your ad and want to purchase your books. Since you both go to the same school, you don't have to ship the book. Just find a place to meet and make the transaction.

5. Craigslist
Trying listing your textbooks on Craigslist. Listings are by local area, so the interested party would probably drive to your campus to pick up the textbook they are interested in purchasing. Craigslist doesn't charge a fee to make a listing. You just have to field questions by e-mail about your books.

There are numerous ways for college students to resell their textbooks for money. The best option would be to try a few different methods and see which one gives the best buyback price for your textbooks.

Language & Emigration to Spain

Language & Emigration to Spain

When immigrating to Spain, You will often end up in one of the "Autonomous communities." Much of these have their own language. In fact currently central government is in effort to protect Castilian as a central language, because the autonomous communities have adopted a new standard where their local or won language is the one to be used. Castilian is subordinate to it.

Textbooks

This holds for the communities like: Catalonia, The Basque Country, Valencia or Galicia.

Textbooks

One reason why people may choose not to migrate to either of these autonomous communities is just that: language. When moving there you have to learn Castilian and the local language, like Catalan in Catalonia.

Castilian is not a problem for many foreigners. It is like an investment. There are people who learn and speak Russian or Chinese which skill makes them profitable for their international profession.
A more provincial language like Euskara (which is spoken in the Basque country) or Catalonian doesn't offer you any benefits outside Spain.

A more important reason not to migrate to these communities is the generation effect. Think about having children. In Catalonia children will be obliged to learn the local language and only Castilian "the original Spanish language" as a second language. When you are raising your kids as a foreigner in such a community, your children will speak a language you will never understand.

Think about it.

The way you think about the future may influence you decision to migrate to such a region or not; if you think you new home only as a transition or as a permanent settlement. How much do you feel attached to the region is one of the questions.

Cognitive Styles of Learning

Cognitive Styles of Learning

The secret of getting better grades in college is actually much easy than you realize. You probably know some students struggle hard still get bad grades in school. And you also listen about those students, who get 'A' grade with low effort. This is due to cognitive style of learning. The students who work hard but do not use their cognitive style of learning get bad grades in exams.

Textbooks

There are three main cognitive styles of learning listed below, and key to get better grades:

Textbooks

* Visual
* Auditory
* Kinesthetic

Visual

The people, who use their visual cognitive style of learning, learn more by seeing the things than feeling or hearing them. These students learn much more rapidly by looking the things, or seeing any diagram that is explaining something.

Auditory

These students use their auditory ability to learn the things. They hear the things more rapidly than seeing or feeling them. They learn quickly by listening to a tape or paying attention on the words of the teacher delivering lecture. The auditory learner students will struggle hard to read the textbooks or academic notes.

Kinesthetic

These people are good learner by feeling things physically, and emotionally. The kinesthetic people are introverted, quiet, and want to remain alone. They enjoy their surroundings, and interpret their own meanings. These have creative mind, and have the hardest time in class, because, all the teaching in the class is visual or auditory in nature.

Surely, you have one of these three cognitive abilities. Use that ability in proper way to learn the things, and get good grades in school or college.

Considering an LPN to RN Bridge Program - What to Look For

Considering an LPN to RN Bridge Program - What to Look For

Are you an LPN who has been considering becoming an RN? If so, you're not alone. In today's economy, there are so many reasons why the time is right to pursue your degree through an RN bridge program. Given the current nursing shortage, you are practically guaranteed to be offered a job in the professional area of your choice. You will also enjoy a higher wage, better benefits, and the satisfaction of finally being paid at a rate commensurate with the work you do.

Textbooks

How do you choose the right LPN to RN bridge program that meets your needs? If your goal is to earn your degree quickly, easily, and affordably, consider the following to make sure you choose the right LPN to RN bridge program for you:

Textbooks

Are you self motivated? Motivation is the key reason that many people fail when they attempt to take an online program. Look for a program that has been developed with this in mind, and will help you stay on track. Beware of programs that claim to offer you a "system" to get your degree but only deliver you a stack of study guides or text books.

Are you capable of self study without support? Support is important in helping students succeed. Look for a program with an active student forum where you can interact and talk with other students in the program. Is the forum moderated regularly by knowledgeable, experienced nurses? Some programs also offer live two-way conversation interactions, so that you can always speak to someone who is waiting to help you.

Are you a visual learner? Instead of reading stacks of dull textbooks, you might opt for a program that offers video material designed to cover the same material as you would encounter in textbooks, but in a more visually appealing manner. If you are like more than 80% of other people who are visual learners, watching trumps reading any day!

Are you a good test taker? You should look for a program that offers resources to help you not only prepare for the nursing theorem portion of the test, but that will also offer plenty of guided practice taking the exam. Being that distance learning LPN to RN bridge programs are based on credit by examination you need to be sure you bone up on your testing skills. Your degree depends on it! If you're not good at test taking, don't worry. It is a skill that can be learned if given the right support and guidance.

Are you wanting to finish your degree in as short a time as possible? Taking an online LPN to RN bridge program can help you earn your degree faster than taking the same program in the traditional manner. This is because you can study at your own pace, and you are not forced to learn at the same pace as an entire class. People who are often impatient in traditional classrooms will find this appealing because you won't be held back by your classmates.

There are an abundance of online RN bridge programs available today, making it doubly important that you find the right program to meet your needs. The most important thing you need to ask is are they accredited and who are they accredited by? Do your research on the accrediting body. Just because they put their stamp of approval on the program doesn't mean it will be nationally recognized. Look for programs that are regionally accredited.

Donating Used Textbooks

Donating Used Textbooks

At the end of each semester, professors across the country make decisions on the textbooks they are going to use for their classes. Sometimes this is done through a committee and often it is done by a department. Students are always ready to sell their used textbooks back to the bookstores and if their edition of the book isn't going to be used again, the bookstore will not buy the book back.

Textbooks

Sometimes you can sell your books online and sometimes they are too old to sell. There is another way though if you just want to get rid of them: you can donate them to worthy causes.

Textbooks

Used textbooks are always needed in a variety of populations. People who are incarcerated, low income students and students in other countries are in particular need of any kind of textbook. There are also a variety of programs across the world that will take textbooks for different reasons.

Some of the programs that you can donate textbooks include:

1. Books for Africa -- although their emphasis is on elementary grades, they are doing great work for children in Africa who would not have access to books or textbooks without programs to help. You can find out more at their website online

2. Sudan-American Foundation for Education -- they take books for elementary, college and universities. They have several projects that help the youth and older students in their area.

3. American Medical Students Association -- if you are a medical student or know someone who is, and you are ready to let go of some of your textbooks, this is a great place to donate. They take medical textbooks and journals. They also list several other places that accept donations of used textbooks. You can find out more at their web page on the Internet.

4. Better World Books -- this organization gets their books by doing book drives on 1600 campuses world wide. They are always looking for other universities and colleges to help them in creating these drives. You can find out how you can help your college help them through their online website.

These are just a few of the worthy programs where you can send your books. When you are donating to programs like these it is important to understand that they each have a specific way to donate books. You will be wise to go to their websites to see what you need to do so they can get your books quickly. Addresses and opportunities to donate are available as well.

Donating used textbooks is a great way to get rid of books that you would otherwise throw away. You can also donate other books to these causes.

Reading-Study Strategies for Students - The Whole Book DR-TA (Directed Reading-Thinking Activity)

Reading-Study Strategies for Students - The Whole Book DR-TA (Directed Reading-Thinking Activity)

Regardless of whether students are in middle school, high school, or even college, we cannot assume that they know how to maneuver through and use their textbooks effectively. Particularly at the beginning of the year, it will be time well spent to begin to teach your students how to do so - especially regarding the particulars of how to learn using the texts in your discipline.

Textbooks

One means of having students do this in a structured way is the Whole Book Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (DR-TA). This DR-TA is an important activity to conduct at the beginning of the year because it allows students to become familiar with the organization of the book (Spiegel, 1980). Skimming asks students to reflect on the relative difficulty of the text and to begin thinking about the amount of studying that will be involved in learning from this text. This is also a good time for teachers to share their expectations for using the textbook.

Textbooks

The Whole Book DR-TA may be conducted individually (in a tutoring situation) or as a whole class activity. Students' responses do not have to be stated aloud nor written out in complete sentences. Encourage students to have "internal monologues" as they go along.

It has been effective for me to model my own thinking about what I think will be included in a particular section and also to allow students to see that I am just conjecturing--supported conjecturing--but conjecturing, nonetheless. In other words, my internal monologue has the volume turned up for students to hear.

Students are asked to skim and scan the table of contents, the index, the introduction, the preface, the appendices, and specific features that are particular to their textbooks; e.g., in a mathematics textbook, the ratio of 'running text' to 'numbers,' diagrams, problems, 'boxes' (the type with - what students consider to be - extraneous information), and so forth. They are asked to skim and scan each of these parts one at a time and to provide responses as they go along. You will want to convey that it's not a speed trial.

Different items will catch students' eyes as they go through this process. Sometimes they will see their own last name in the index, or they will see a word that they know in a different context, and they will have to "check it out" to see if it is what they hope it is, or maybe one of the boxes will contain information that is interesting to them, or they will see a project mentioned that looks like it might be fun, or.... It is amazing how an activity that elicits some groans at first ends up intriguing a number of the students (and these are the ones who admit it!).

One hopes that students see some topics or terms that are familiar to them, but that they also see how foreign some of the material is. For some students, this will help them make a commitment to beginning their study program early, and not letting a few chapters slide by before the panic sets in. The discussions that ensue during the Whole Book DR-TA are extremely informative for the teacher as s/he hears likes, dislikes, questions, concerns, etc. A better picture of the students is formed after just one day of using this process than through many days of traditional, beginning-of-the-year classwork.

Where Can I Rent College Textbooks?

Where Can I Rent College Textbooks?

Purchasing college textbooks can be almost as expensive as paying the costs of tuition these days. Most students are more interested in being able to eat than in having pretty, glossy pictures to look at and are asking the question, "Where can I rent college textbooks?"

Textbooks

There are a number of options in answer to the question of renting college textbooks. Most people turn to the Internet to find their textbooks. However, there are a very small number of campus bookstores which are beginning to offer rental textbooks as well.

Textbooks

Most of the college campus bookstores which offer textbook rentals do not advertise this option. This means you'll need to ask someone in charge before assuming the stores will rent you books.

The easiest way to answer the question, "Where can I rent college textbooks?" is to go online to your preferred search engine and type in some variation on "college textbook rentals." You'll probably come up with over 15,000,000 hits.

Most of the major sites have a number of similarities beginning with the fact that the first information you'll need to provide the company is either the specific title of the book, the author, or the ISBN. Usually, having the ISBN is the surest way to guarantee you are getting the correct book for your course.

A number of these companies also offer a variety of terms for rental, from 30, 45 or 60 days, to quarter and semester time frames. Some companies will also provide a summer option for 55 days, or even allow you the unique opportunity of selecting your own return date based on when your course actually ends. This option does affect the rental fee however.

All of the major online textbook rental companies offer free shipping for delivery and return of the texts, but it can also have a little impact on the actual rental fee charged for the books, so pay attention to that.

If you're particularly eco-friendly, you can choose a company that offers to plant a tree or provide some environmental support for every rental that you make. Many companies also use eco-friendly packaging materials too.

What happens if I drop a course for some reason?

This is a good question and something that a number of rental companies have already taken care of, by offering you a 100% money back guarantee for any book returned within 30 days of renting.

Regardless of which rental company you decide to use, answering the question "Where can I rent college textbooks?" begins with getting onto the Internet and doing a little comparison shopping.

How to Get More Money When You Sell Your Textbook

How to Get More Money When You Sell Your Textbook

A college education is one of the most important and expensive endeavors a young person can take. There are many costs and expenses that go into a college degree, not the least of those being textbooks. According to the US Government Accountability Office (GAO), college textbooks have increased at a rate of 6 percent per year over the past two decades. This is nearly twice the rate of inflation. With increases like this for college textbooks, along with the many other college expenses, students need to find ways to cut back on costs in order to pursue a degree.

Textbooks

Rising textbook costs are one of the most frequent complaints heard by college students. Carlo Checri, a recent graduate from the University of North Texas, stated that "books are always those things you don't think about when you're registering for classes, then when you go to the bookstore, you suddenly realize that you have to spend a lot more money." Mr. Checri's sentiment is felt by a many college students. In fact, numerous community colleges see textbook costs totaling the same amount as semester long classes.

Textbooks

In addition to the high costs of buying books, when asked about reselling them, Checri said, "I've had some luck selling books back, but a lot of the time it wasn't worth the effort since I knew I would be getting back less than half of what I paid anyway." Mr. Checri went on to say that he has tried selling his books back to his library, to friends taking the same classes, and online.

There are several unique ways to try to get more money for selling college textbooks. However, to start, one wants to make sure they are buying their textbooks the cheapest possible way. Finding good deals on textbooks really helps when a student goes to resell them. In a perfect world, students would be able to buy their books, and sell them again for the same price. Several ideas covered here can help move students closer to that "perfect world".

WAYS TO BUY TEXTBOOKS CHEAPER

Procrastination is the most costly part of buying textbooks. As many students will notice, college bookstores typically sell books new and used. The used books are typically much cheaper than buying a book new; however, the used books are always the first to go because of this. If a student waits until the last minute to buy his/her books, chances are, all the used books will have already been sold and the student will end up paying the higher cost of buying new.

Another option for purchasing books is to buy online at sites like Amazon or Half. However, when purchasing books online, students can face similar problem as purchasing from the local book store. Other problems can also arise, such as shipping costs and time frames, and the possibility of lost packages. All this can increase the cost of purchasing books, and also add additional frustration and hassle.

A final option for purchasing books would be on sites like Trade My Text, a free site that allows students to buy, sell, and trade textbooks with each other for free. A site like this allows students to buy their books from classmates who may have just taken the class they need the book for. This can cut down on the cost of purchasing the book and also eliminates the dreads of shipping.

WAYS TO SELL BOOKS FOR MORE

So how do you sell a book for more than the half back "guarantee" of the local book store? There are several ways, many of them similar to the above ways to buy a textbook. In a perfect world, a student would buy a used, 0 book for say , use it for the semester, and then resell it for right around . In the real world, that same student buys the book for 0 and typically resells it for or less. The way to sell a book for more is to try to accomplish the "perfect world" scenario. Getting a good deal on a book allows a student to turn around and quickly resell it at a price of nearly what they paid. Again, the key to selling for more is purchasing at the right price.

The college bookstore is always a last resort option for selling a book. Chances are that a student won't make much of their money back by selling to the bookstore. The best place to start when selling a book is online. Going to places like Amazon, Half, or Trade My Text can save students time and get them more for their books. Amazon and Half allow students to reach a large viewing group to market their book and although there is a fee, it is not terribly high. Also, with Amazon, there is no fee charged unless a student sells their item. Trade My Text is a unique site that acts as an online market place for students to buy, sell, and trade textbooks among each other at their particular college for free. This is also an effective way to sell a book at the end of the semester.

Using online websites to market books is the most effective way to sell a student's book for the most amount of money. Using several sites can be even more effective than using just one. For example, listing a book on Amazon, Half, and Trade My Text opens a student's book up to many more viewers, and since Trade My Text is free and Amazon only charges if the books is sold, there is no loss in doing this.

In summary, textbooks can be a very expensive part of any college education, but with a few unique and untraditional tactics, saving money on books becomes easy. Keep in mind, the first step to saving money on books, is buying them at the right price. When a book is bought at the right price, selling it for more on the back side becomes easy.

Inexpensive Textbooks - Here's How to Find Dirt Cheap Textbooks

Inexpensive Textbooks - Here's How to Find Dirt Cheap Textbooks

Inexpensive textbooks might seem hard to find, but that's only if you don't know where to look. Text books can be extremely expensive, with some people spending over a thousand dollars per semester just trying to get their required texts for their courses. For many students, that's more money they don't have and don't want to spend--so what's the solution to this increasingly common problem?

Textbooks

One of your best options is to use a book search engine. These are great for a number of reasons and they can really help save you time and money like you wouldn't believe. A text book search engine will mainly help by taking your ISBN number, author name, title name or keyword and it will return results from the top online book vendors. Places like Amazon or Half.com--sites known for having great text book deals. A book search engine works better than just visiting each site separately since you can get the cheapest results from each site, and then purchase the book through the website that has the lowest price. This saves you time and money--big time.

Textbooks

Many students don't have the time or patience to go to each site online trying to find the best deal, that's why a text book search engine is definitely the best route to go for finding inexpensive textbooks. You can search multiple sites simultaneously and only go with the websites that have the lowest prices for you. This means you're guaranteed inexpensive textbooks and won't pay a cent more than you have to.

Five Simple Strategies to Help Your Child Improve His Reading Comprehension and Do Better in School

Five Simple Strategies to Help Your Child Improve His Reading Comprehension and Do Better in School

Sadly, when public school teachers assign comprehension questions to
a particular reading passage or chapter, they think they are using a
teaching strategy to help their students learn the content. WRONG!
Asking students comprehension questions determines whether students
know the answers to questions pertaining to the passage(s) they have just read. This is an assessment tool, not a teaching strategy.

Textbooks

Textbooks in content areas such as, science, history, etc. give
information. Textbooks are called expository texts. An expository text
presents information in the form of facts and concepts.

Textbooks

Typically, in lower elementary grades children are taught
comprehension lessons in a narrative text. A narrative text tells a story.
Children have trouble comprehending and completing assignments in
expository texts because we teach them to read and develop
comprehension skills in narrative texts. Therefore, when children start
reading to learn, rather than learning to read, they struggle with content
area (history, science, etc.) assignments.

When your child comes home with an expository reading assignment, sit
down with him and follow these five strategies to help him improve
reading comprehension and thus get better grades in school:

1. REVIEW THE TEXTBOOK AND DISCUSS HOW IT IS ORGANIZED

Each subject area textbook will be organized differently. Review with
your child how the textbook is organized. Spend time looking to see
what content is covered, how each chapter is organized, where learning
aids -such as graphics, glossaries, summaries, definitions, tables of
contents, and the index - are located.

Students unfamiliar with their textbooks look for answers only within the
written text. They are unaware that information can be found in other
places, too. Many students don't realize that the graphs, sidebars,
headings, and pictures provide answers.

2. READ THE TEXTBOOK ALOUD TO YOUR CHILD

Teachers usually call students together, get their attention, and read
narrative texts aloud. Because the teacher is modeling a reading
strategy aloud for narrative texts, children develop an ear for how stories
sound. They come to learn that stories have characters, settings,
problems, and solutions. However, teachers seldom read textbooks
aloud. Textbooks are usually assigned to be read independently. With
such little modeling reading these kinds of texts, it's no wonder children
are confused and cannot comprehend their textbooks and have difficulty
completing assignments.

If we want children to develop an ear for expository passages we need
to begin reading textbooks aloud to them. Point out that not all reading is
the same. For example, say, "I'm going to read this CHAPTER aloud on
the history of the Spanish Conquest. As I read, we are going to be
looking for information." This will make your child aware that this is a
different kind of text. Over time, he will begin to develop an ear for how
expository texts sound, and start using a different reading strategy for
them.

3. SET A PURPOSE FOR READING

Prior to reading your child's assigned reading passage, you and your
child need to read the assigned questions at the end of the passage. By
setting a purpose for reading, you and your child will be more likely to
recognize the answers when you see them in the passage.

4.TALK ABOUT WHAT YOUR CHILD ALREADY KNOWS ABOUT THE
SUBJECT

In order to learn a concept, we must attach it to something we already
know. Reading comprehension is closely related to prior knowledge.
Help your child become aware of any prior knowledge he has about the
topic in the textbook. This will improve his comprehension because he
will have a frame of reference for the new information he reads in the
text.

5. HAVE YOUR CHILD TAKE NOTES AS YOU READ

As you read the text together, have your child make notes about
important facts and concepts in the passage. This will help him answer
comprehension questions, as well as provide him with summary
information he may need later for reports and essays.

Reading is a complicated process. It will take your child several
sessions to learn these strategies well enough to be able to use them
independently. Guide your child through these five strategies each time
he has an expository reading assignment until he seems to have
mastered them. When he starts using these strategies automatically, let
him try working independently. You should begin to see noticeable
improvement in his reading comprehension, his assignments, and his
grades. In fact, you'll probably find that you now have an easier time
understanding expository texts,too.

Textbooks

1st Want someone to hold your hand through homeschooling. Many people think they are not qualified to lead at home and someone to bring up what to do.

Textbooks

2nd You want to be sure"Just do it". People think that to use the public school systems capable of textbooks and teach the children what they need to learn. Therefore believe that homeschoolers need to manually do to one year from the school.

3rd The manuals are better able to stay on track. If you follow a manual, you know exactly what year, where are you and when you are behind or not.

The fact is that people who tend textbooks at home to a high degree of burnout. When using atextbook and find that it is too difficult or too easy or doesn't fit your child's learning style, you either need to adapt the curriculum or plod through the year.

One way to avoid burnout is to vary the learning/teaching style that you are using. Children who like workbooks will probably enjoy sitting and filling them out for an hour or more a day, but children who are more hands-on learners may struggle. If this is the case in your home, find ways to reinforce the material in the textbook without having to read text and answer questions. Take field trips, act out the war or time of history that you are studying, do experiments, draw pictures or do art projects related to the text.

Sometimes parents enjoy using checklists instead of homeschool textbooks. They still keep them on track, but provide a more varied approach to homeschooling.

Advantages of Traditional Textbooks

Advantages of Traditional Textbooks

Online and electronic textbooks for college courses are becoming more common every year. While these do serve to satisfy some of the demands of 21st Century learners, it remains true that traditional paperbacks and hardbacks possess some strong advantages over e-texts. Students who are serious about learning as much as possible and achieving high grades would be wise to take these issues into account when making a text purchasing decision.

Textbooks

Compatibility

Textbooks

Electronic texts by their very nature raise compatibility issues. Users must be certain to purchase books in the correct format and version for their computer operating system and reader software. Even when great care is taken, Digital Rights Management (DRM) can interfere with a student's ability to use the text he or she has legitimately purchased. A commonly reported problem, for example, concerns software updates. A student whose e-text was working well yesterday may find that it is incompatible with an upgraded version of reader software. This is more than annoying and inconvenient. It can mean that a vital textbook is unavailable at key times during the semester. Instead of studying, the student will be on the phone to customer service. Students who purchase or rent traditional textbooks will not have these problems.

Personalization

Many students benefit by the ability to write in their textbooks, making notations in the margins, drawing arrows to connect related information, and jotting down things they do not yet fully understand. Because of the nature of paper and pencil, these notations will be permanent unless the user makes a deliberate effort to erase them.

This is not the case with electronic books. Some e-reader programs do not allow annotations at all. Others include some tools to provide these functions, but due to software failures, user-created marks may not be there the next time the program is opened. Even when no malfunctions occur, some students may find that electronic annotations are less satisfying than the pen-based kind. There is something inherently powerful about underlining a passage word by word while reading it. Clicking and dragging to make the mark does not have the same effect. Particularly for visual learners, paper-based textbooks are the more reasonable option.

Shared Study

Lastly, classmates can borrow a traditional textbook far more readily than your e-text. Lending a book means only handing it over. Lending an e-text means giving up a computer or e-reader for an extended time. Most students would be reluctant to do this, particularly if it also requires giving a classmate access passwords.

For all these reasons, book rental or purchase is preferable to the use of electronic texts.
